A Child's Promise

Billy

photoBilly's story is extraordinary. The extreme level of abuse and neglect this nine year old had been subjected to by his biological family was off the charts. Chained in the back yard like an abused animal, physically assaulted, starved, forced to eat out of garbage cans...the details of this child's life are heart wrenching.

At nine years old, when he should have been ready for the third grade, Billy didn't have even the most basic skills. He didn't know how to use a fork and spoon. He couldn't read or write, dress himself or use a bathroom. He never had a toy, a bed to sleep in or regular meals. He didn't recognize love or friendship because he had no experience with them.

Then, at last, everything for Billy changed, and his life was transformed at The House of the Good Shepherd. Within two years, this remarkable child learned how to function in a normal environment. Safe and secure, at last, he blossomed into a successful student and expressed such joy in living that it touched everyone around him. Billy was able to share his feelings with supportive peers and adults. He learned to make good decisions and feel pride in his accomplishments.

While at The House, Billy experienced his first holiday party, his first birthday gift, and his first words of encouragement. The House of the Good Shepherd provided Billy with a safe haven, a place to grow and thrive. Billy finally has the life that every young man deserves. He has the ability to have a meal at a restaurant, carry on a conversation, and respect himself as a person. They helped him renew his life and restore his hope for a bright and healthy future.
